Madam C.J Walker (1867-1919)
Madam C.J Walker was a beauty entrepreneur who created a line of hair and scalp treatments for African American women in the early 1900s. After suffering from hair loss due to a scalp condition, she developed her own formula consisting of sulfur-based creams that she used on her own head as well as sold to other women. Her success led her to become one of America’s first female self-made millionaires and she established the Madam C.J Walker Manufacturing Company which still produces beauty products today.
Elle Johnson (1912–1998)
Elle Johnson was an African American chemist who developed the first sunscreen specifically designed for people with darker skin tones in 1944. She recognized that darker complexions were more susceptible to sun damage and formulated SPF 8 Sunscreen with higher levels of UV protection than other sunscreens at the time. Although it has since been reformulated, Elle Johnson’s original product is still available today under the brand name Suntan Lotion No 8 by Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula.
Linda Miles (1947–2005)
Linda Miles was an African American biochemist who revolutionized how skin care products were formulated in 1975 when she invented a new method of emulsification called “controlled release technology” which allowed for more effective delivery of active ingredients into skin cells without irritation or sensitization. This process enabled manufacturers to develop more targeted formulations that could better address specific skin issues such as dryness or wrinkles while also providing increased protection against environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution. Linda Miles went on to found her own company, Cosmetech Laboratories, Inc., where she continued developing cutting-edge technologies until her death in 2005 at age 58. Her legacy lives on through her groundbreaking work which is still being used by many major skincare brands today!
